Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise as a young kid. DuVernay worked as night nurses to afford her aunt the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art as well as theatre. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay was educated by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton during the majority of her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In 1990, she completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood CA. DuVernay was in college when she became attracted to the field of production for the broadcast media. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the garbage belonging to one of the juries. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Apart from PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
